Appalachian Walking Sticks

   Why use a walking stick?

Typically, a person who has difficulty walking will use a cane to support their body or help take the weight off an injured leg or foot. But why should you use a walking stick?

If you like to hike in hilly or mountainous areas, a walking stick will help reduce stress on knees, legs, feet and back, especially when going uphill. Your stick will also help you balance when stepping on slippery stones while crossing a creek or stream. By using your stick to propel yourself, you'll increase your power and speed going up hills.

Of course, you'll find dozens of other uses for a stick when hiking or camping. You can use your stick to push branches and briars out of your path, help hold up a tent or tarp, and defend yourself against wild animals!

When you are choosing the height of your walking sticks, keep these measurements in mind as a general rule of thumb: If your height is less than 5'7" use 48" walking sticks, between 5'7" and 5'10" use 54", and over 5'10' use 59".
