Historical Preservation

Saving the Kelton Three

In Los Angeles, historic monument status does not automatically provide lifetime protection for a property. The historic designation protects the properties from demolition for 6 months. Another 6-month protection period will be granted by the Los Angeles city council if those in favor of historic protection demonstrate a "good faith" effort to protect the properties, such as attempting to find buyers interested in preservation. However, if there is no resolution after this 1-year period, and if the developer performs an Environmental Impact Report showing no substantial environmental impact, then the developer may demolish the properties.

Finding buyers for these properties will be critical. There are many advantages to owning a historic property, including a 2/3 reduction in property taxes. Our only other option is a lawsuit against the developer.

A large part of our success thus far has been the result of many letters, phone calls, and faxes to Councilman Jack Weiss' office. Please take a moment to contact Councilman Weiss and let him know how you feel about protecting these properties.

It is also time to let the developer know that we expect him to respect the historic designation and either (a) restore and maintain the buildings as the viable rental properties they are, or (b) sell the properties to people interested in preserving them.

Thank you for your support. To be included on an email list for updates and information about the Kelton Three (also known as the Siple House, Pengelly House and Durham House), please send an email to savekelton3@yahoo.com.
